beginner bowling tips and basics

learn beginner bowling tips

Bowling is something that just about anyone can play and learn with just a little bit of practice and instruction. You do not have to a professional and understand all the technical terms and rules to have a great time.

If you aspire to move to the professional or competitive level than at that point you will want to learn a bit more about the game. Here are some compiled bowling tips and techniques and useful info for you to become a better bowler...

Bowling Basics

Hitting the Pocket

Bowling is an indoor sport in which an individual rolls a ball down a wooden floor in an attempt to knock over as many of the ten pins as possible.

If you look closely at the wooden floor you will notice that the individual boards are different. This is because they are a measured distance apart to help with the aiming and picking up spares; this becomes a great aid in more serious games and it is quite helpful if you just understand the system.

The lane is made up of 39 boards that are 42 inches wide. The closest pin to the front is known as the head pin and carries the number 1. The goal of the game of course is to knock down as many pins as possible on your two attempts at rolling the ball.

A good angle to take is what is known as the "pocket".

The pocket method for right-handed people is when the ball is aimed to roll between the #1 and #3 pins (or just to the right of the head pin). If you are left-handed however, the ball is aimed to roll between the #1 and the #2 pins (or just to the left of the head pin).

The illustration above shows the direction and numbering of the bowling pins in a ten-pin bowling set up. If you hit the #1 pin directly in the middle, you will probably end up with some pins standing.

To avoid that, you need to move slightly to the side that you are aiming for so that the pocket angle can be widened a bit. For example, if you were right handed you would want to move a bit to the right hand side (opposite for left-handers).

The ball must come in contact with at least 4 pins for bowling a strike. For a right-handed bowler, a strike would need to hit the #1, #3, #5 and #9 pins (#1, #2, #5 and #8 pins for left-handers). Those pins will then take care of the rest.

How to Play Bowling

If you're a newbie bowler, sometimes hitting the alley can be a little intimidating. It can seem like everyone has been bowling longer than you have. Also, in many places, the bowling alley has its own little community talking its own language and lingo that may sound like Greek when you're the new kid on the block.

So can you start to fit in?

Take a little time to learn some common bowling terms, and soon no one will be able to tell you didn't know your break point from your foul line a few weeks ago.

There are several bowling rules a bowler should know as well as information of technique that can make your bowling experience more enjoyable and successful.

The most important rules in bowling have to do with scorekeeping. All games have rules, and bowling is not an exception. There are several restrictions and guidelines that need to be followed if you want to be a bowler.

The bowling rules of scorekeeping should be followed exactly especially if you are learning to become a competitive bowler. They are also essential to the game of bowling. It would not seem that keeping score is the most relevant and important part of bowling, but in fact, knowledge of how the score is kept as well as what is going on, may change how you play the game.

Three strikes in a row are known as a Turkey, and additional strikes after that are known as a four-bagger or five-bagger. A perfect game is 300 points and indicates that the bowler has bowled 12 strikes in a row.

Each pin has a number associated with it to indicate where it is placed in the configuration. For example, the most difficult configuration to knock down is a 7/10 split. This represents the two outer most pins remaining after the first throw.

Another one of the most important bowling rules is to use the proper technique for bowling. Primarily, there are a couple of simple moves that will improve your bowling skills. They are bowling rules of posture, pressure and release and by perfecting your technique you can improve your skills as well as protect your body from injury.

Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but concentration on your bowling can really help when you are trying to get that high score. Re-think the physical bowling rules, and then envision your ball rolling down the lane towards a perfect strike. If you're a beginner, or still feel like a beginner even after many years of bowling, you may find this bowling guide helpful.

Bowling Balls

Why you should own one...

If you are just beginning, it is likely that you do not have your own bowling ball. The bowling alley has a variety of balls to choose from that range in size and weight.

When in the bowling alley you will hear the term "house ball". The house ball simply refers to bowling balls that are provided by the alley. The balls on the racks are color coded by weight, which ranges from 6 to 16 pounds.

Most bowling alleys have what is called a smart ball that allows you to determine the size and weight of bowling ball that will best suit you. The smart ball functions as a guide and has a series of holes for you to try out.

After giving the smart ball a try, the clerk can assist you in getting the appropriate ball. Most players will try different weights of bowling balls until they find one that they are most comfortable with.

Most bowling balls have a series of three holes drilled in them. This is for the thumb, ring finger and middle finger to grip the ball appropriately. This grip will allow you to have a good solid hold on the ball.

After you have become comfortable with the sport, you may decide to buy your own bowling ball to ensure a good start every time.

Bowling balls come in a variety of colors and most can be personalized with whatever you like. Some bowlers that play on teams or in leagues will have their initials monogrammed on the ball or some type of identifying logo.

If you will be bowling frequently, it is recommended that you purchase your own bowling ball. You can get advice from experts or do research online on choosing a bowling ball for yourself. This way you can get comfortable with one ball and not worry about getting a different ball every time you visit the alley.

You might want to try out a few different weights to see how you do with them. To do this, a player should lift the ball and if it is a struggle, try a lighter weight. If the ball is too heavy, a person risks injury or strain. Make sure that the ball is comfortable and you can get a good grip and roll away.

Take Care of Your Bowling Ball

...and the ball will take care of your game!

The conditions of the lane can wear on your bowling ball after a while. In order for you to be able to perform well consistently, your ball must be in good condition. There are a couple of ways to do this.

First, you should store your bowling ball in a container that keeps it safe and free of damage. Secondly, a ball spinner is a good investment. The spinners can assist you in cleaning, sanding and polishing your bowling ball. Spinners run anywhere from $300 up to $2000 dollars, just whatever your pocket book can afford.

Keeping your bowling ball clean can reduce the need for sanding. If you keep the dirt and oil removed, you can keep the ball from becoming scratched and giving unpredictable results. When the ball is dirty, it can reduce friction and cause undesired consequences.

The reason for sanding your bowling ball is to remove imbedded dirt and scratches that occur over time. When the bowling ball rolls down the lane, it picks up oil and dirt, which can scratch the surface and reduce performance. Also if the ball is scratched it can lead to an inconsistent game. As with anything else it is important to take care of your equipment.

Polishing your bowling ball will help with the skid on lane conditions that are drier. Plus it makes the ball shiny and new looking! Aside from the aesthetic value though, polishing really does increase the performance of the ball and is recommended.

There are a number of cleaners sold on the market that can help you keep your ball free of dirt and oil. It is recommended that you clean your ball after every time of use. While it may seem excessive to clean the ball after your game, it is well worth it.

Your bowling ball is a performance piece of equipment and does not come cheap. So the best way to improve your game is to maintain your equipment properly. If you are unsure of which product to use, the best method is to ask someone from the bowling alley or an avid bowler.

Bowling Shoes

Why you need to wear them...

Bowling shoes are perhaps not what you want your first date to see you in. There seems to be something about these shoes that is just not flattering to most people, especially the recreational bowler.

Many people express concern about wearing shoes that others have worn before them. There is of course nothing to fear, the bowling alley disinfects the shoes after every use, and to be on the safe side; giving them a spray of your own before you put them on is not such a bad idea.

Bowling shoes are made with a leather sole that allows you to slide when you are releasing the ball. This is very important to your release and builds the momentum of the ball. Without these sliding soles, your normal shoes would catch on the floor, and either mess up or shot or pitch you right over on your face.

The bowling shoes also help preserve the bowling lanes and keep them in working order. The soles on the shoes do not scuff up the lanes the way normal shoes would; if normal shoes were allowed, the lanes would eventually have grooves and digs in them that would disrupt the way the balls roll.

One of the keys to bowling is the ability to slide and to allow the ball to release and naturally flow. If you are unable to slide or loose your footing, you will not roll a good ball.

Many people wish to bowl in their socks, which is not allowed in most bowling alleys due to safety issues. The approach areas are sometimes slippery and it is best to wear the recommended shoes.

Do You Need to Practice Your Bowling?

Of Course! Just A Reminder For You. :-)

Everyone has heard the old saying, "practice makes perfect". This saying is just as true for bowling as for anything else. The more you practice, the more you will experience the different aspects of the game and learn tricks to bowl a better game.

Practice will allow you to learn from your mistakes. Many times players must experiment with a variety of balls, grips and approaches before they are comfortable. It takes a little while to find what is most comfortable and works best for each individual.

Bowling is no different than any other sport in that you learn from your mistakes and discover what works well through experiencing and encountering different situations.

Therefore you should practice as much as possible. If you want to become a better bowler, you should hit the bowling alley every chance you get. It is best to join a league and stay involved. You cannot expect to get good at bowling if you never go!

Do not fall into a rut and only use one shot. A good bowling game will consist of not only delivering the ball in different manners, but also by means of different approaches. If you only roll straight balls, it will be very difficult to have a good score.

Most people are not naturally good at every shot that there is in bowling, but with practice you can improve. If you can learn to use a combination of shots, you will improve your score greatly.

How to practice bowling?

Bowling's Most Difficult Shots to Make

Picking Up Spares / Splits

Of the many different combinations of pins that can make up a bowling shot, some are more difficult than others, and there are a few that strike fear into the hearts of even the most seasoned bowlers.

Bowling shots are commonly referred to by the pin numbers of the pins that are standing when the bowler is attempting his shot.

For example, a 1-3 is when the bowler is attempting to knock down the front pin and the one behind it on the right, and a 1-2-4-7 is when the leftmost pins on each row are standing in a line.

One shot that is a relatively difficult one to make is a 10 for a left-handed person, or a 7 for a right handed person. As this shot consists of a single pin on the same side as the bowler's throwing hand, it allows for very little leeway in the shot due to the close proximity of the pin to the gutter. The ball should be thrown in a straight line across the alley to hit the pin.

When a bowler is attempting a second shot, and there is a gap between some of the pins, this is known as a "split". While no split is easy, there are some that are extremely difficult even for top professional bowlers.

In fact, there are two splits that are considered the most difficult shots in bowling, one of which is the 3-6-7-10 split. In a nutshell, this shot consists of three pins lined up on the right, and a single pin in the back left corner. The best way to attempt this shot is to hit between the 3 and 6, and hope that one of them will travel across the lane and pick up the 7 pin, while either the 6 pin or the ball knocks down the number 10.

But the granddaddy of them all, the 7-10 split, is when the two back corners are left standing, and it is considered a rare treat when a split like this is picked up. Some bowlers have a favorite technique that they try when faced with a situation like this, but most people just try to hit one of the pins really hard in an attempt to cause it to bounce across the lane and hit the other pin.

The most difficult shots in bowling can be frustrating, but with some practice, one can become adept at making them from time to time. It is shots like these that keep the game challenging and interesting and if bowling was too easy, then it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

Knowing how to pick up splits/spares will improve your bowling score greatly. If you want diagrams and video tutorials, here is a spare-shooting guide that shows you how to convert spares.

Bowling Magazines

Stay informed

A good way to stay up on the sport and new products is to subscribe to a bowling magazine. There are many magazines to choose from and most are relatively inexpensive.

Not only do the magazines offer new product information, but also information on tournaments and charity events. And there are numerous articles and tips to help improve your game.

One of the best methods for learning something new is listening to someone that has experience. The best way to find someone at a professional level is through magazines. Most of us will not have a chance to walk up to a professional and ask a question, so the magazine is as close as we can get.

Here is a list of good bowling magazines:

· Bowling Journal International
· Bowling This Month
· Bowling World
· Bowling Digest

Quick Tip: Try Inserts

Improving Your Performance!

Inserts are placed in the finger holes of the bowling ball to improve the grip and your ability to hold the ball. Inserts come in a variety of styles and colors and can improve your comfort level while bowling.

The advantages of inserts are increased comfort level as well as increased grip on the ball. If you put inserts in all of your bowling balls, they will have the same feel, thus assisting you with some level of consistency when you switch between balls.

Inserts are not for everyone; some bowlers complain that they feel like their fingers sometimes hang. If this happens, you can try a different style of insert, or simply not use them at all. As with any other bowling equipment, you may need to try different styles until you find the one that is most suited for you.

Earnings for Professional Bowlers

Most of the professionals have a love for the game and therefore spend most of their time either practicing or following the tour. At the professional level, there is considerable competition and many of the players make their living by bowling.

When it comes time for the tournament, they are all work and no play. They bowl just like others present themselves in a professional manner for work on a daily basis.

As reported by the PBA tour's site, earnings for professional bowlers ranged from $131,000 to $1800. Professional bowlers can make a very decent living by putting their skills to work on the lanes.

Museum of Bowling History

The International Bowling Museum is an excellent place to learn a bit about the history of bowling and some of the people that helped the sport along.

The museum is located in St. Louis MO. and is a 50,000 square foot building. There are displays from bowling found in ancient times to the more recent past. Bowling equipment and apparel are also on display. There are tributes to many bowlers that have helped shape the game that we know and understand today.

This is a great way to study the history of bowling and really get a good look at how the sport has evolved over the years. It is a good educational opportunity for the entire family. There is something for everyone in the museum and you are guaranteed to learn something.

Bowling Fun and Knowledge

Did you know?

  • Bowling pins were originally made of hard rock, maple and pine.
  • The height and circumference of the bowling pin is the same, they are both 15 inches.
  • The #5 pin is referred to as the "king pin", because it is protected by the king and all of his men.
  • When the #7 and #10 pin is split, it is referred to as a goal posts or bedposts.
  • 11 balls are needed to complete a game of 10 pins. This includes 9 strikes and an open ball going into the 10th frame.
  • There are 60 feet from the foul line to the head pin, and 63 feet to the pit.
  • In 1998 a new gold colored pin was introduced. This pin was heavier and thought to decrease the number of strikes.
  • The largest bowling center in the world is in Japan. It has 141 lanes.
  • In 1936 bowling was introduced into the Olympic games in Germany.
  • Snoopy from the cartoon Peanuts used "Joe Sandbagger" for his bowling name.
  • The Waterbufflo's was the name of the team that Fred and Barney bowled on in the cartoon "The Flintstones".
  • King Henry VIII outlawed bowling, citing: it was gambling, too much time was spent on bowling and bowling was only a privilege of the upper classmen.
  • There is a man featured in "Ripley's Believe or Not" that can balance a bowling ball on his chin.
  • The highest that bowling balls can be stacked on top of one another is 11 high. This is featured in "Ripley's Believe it or Not".

Quick Tip: Think Positive

The game is 90% mental

What you tell yourself has a great impact on how you play and even on how you feel. "Self talk" is very important in how you see yourself.

If you carry yourself as unconfident and keep your head down, others will likely view you in the same light, therefore treating you in that manner. If you are confident and have a positive attitude, you will likely succeed.

When you miss a pin or do not make a strike, do not tell yourself how stupid you are. Otherwise, you will eventually believe what you are telling yourself.

Realize and understand that it is impossible for anyone to be perfect. Everyone has days in which they perform better than others. So don't be so hard on yourself, tell yourself that you are a good sport and are doing your best.

You will be surprised that how much better you feel when you pump yourself up rather than beating your head on the wall. So, strengthening your mental game can help improve your bowling game.

shipments of samsung galaxy s4 will reach to 80 million in year 2013 said by analyst

Samsung Galaxy S4 has achieved the feat of being Samsung's fastest selling smartphone clocking 10 million shipments since its launch in April. However, it looks like the Korean major's flagship smartphone is expected to break new records, selling 80 million units this year, as per an analyst.
In a research note (via BGR) to clients, RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue predicts that at the current pace, the Galaxy S4 is likely to cross 20 million shipments in the second quarter of 2013, and could clock 80 million shipments in the calendar year. The analyst offered some perspective comparing the Samsung Galaxy S4 shipments with that of the Galaxy S III. He mentioned that the Samsung Galaxy S III took two months to reach 10 million unit shipments while the Galaxy S4 shipments has crossed 10 million in the first month of its availability. The firm's prediction is based on the assumption that Samsung will also launch the Galaxy Note III in September and Apple will launch the iPhone 5S and iPhone mini.
Samsung had announced that it had shipped 10 million Galaxy S4 smartphones since its launch in April, last week. The phone is already selling in 60 countries and Samsung plans to expand sales to 327 carriers in 155 countries by June.
Samsung had unveiled the Galaxy S4 smartphone on March 14. The phone sports a 5-inch full-HD screen with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor in some regions, and a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor in others. It has 2GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX544MP3 triple-core GPU.
The smartphone comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants but will also feature a microSD card slot for expanding the memory. The Galaxy S4 sports a 13-megapixels rear shooter and a 2-megapixel one on the front. The Galaxy S4 also offers more camera features including dual-shot, employing the use of both front and back camera, an eraser shot mode to remove people from photos, and a Cinemagram like feature called Cinema Photo, among several other tricks. It also offers a number of sensors including a temperature and humidity sensor and motion and gesture control features.

ten changes that will come with microsoft windows 8.1 new features

Top 10 changes that Microsoft Windows 8.1 will bring

After several rumours hinting at the new features that Microsoft's Windows 8.1 would bring, the Redmond giant has officially announced some of them through a new blog post taking a "first look."According to Microsoft, Windows 8.1 will not just respond to customer feedback, will add new features and functionality to improve the touch experience and the operating system's mobile computing potential.
"The Windows 8.1 update will deliver improvements and enhancements in key areas like personalization, search, the built-in apps, Windows Store experience, and cloud connectivity," the company said.
1. New Start tip
The biggest change that the update brings is the Windows Logo at the left hand corner in place of the Start screen "tip" that comes up when one hovers the mouse pointer in Windows 8. The Windows Logo is more recognisable according to Microsoft. It also gives the ability to users to choose between booting to the desktop directly. At the moment, only the Start screen shows up when one boots the PC.
2. Desktop wallpapers for Start screen
Microsoft will now allow users to turn their PCs or tablets into a photo frame when it's locked. Users can choose to show a slideshow of pictures stored locally in their devices or in the cloud via SkyDrive. It will also add the ability to take pictures from the lock screen via the device's camera directly from the lock screen.
Windows-8.1-2.jpgIn addition to this, the update will bring more colours and backgrounds including animated ones for the Windows Start screen and will even allow users to set their desktop background as their Start screen background. As reported previously, the Windows 8.1 Start screen would features new tile sizes including a new large and new small size.
3. Updated Search
According to Microsoft, Windows 8.1's Search charm will offer global search results powered by Bing in "a rich, simple-to-read, aggregated view of many content sources to provide the best "answer" for the user's query." Search will also offer "Quick actions" that include actions users would like to take, for example, play songs or videos. Results from local files, apps, and settings would be accessible in the same was as they are on Windows 8.
Windows-8.1-search.jpg4. App Updates
Microsoft will be updating native apps to offer new functionality. The company mentions that the Pictures app will offer the ability to edit pictures and the Music app has been completely redesigned to offer a better experience and adds that it will also be introducing new apps shortly.
5. New multitasking experience
Following the Windows 8.1 update, users will be able to snap apps in variable sizes, as reported earlier. It will allow users to run three apps simultaneously on one screen and run different Modern UI/ Metro apps on different displays if connected, while keeping the Start screen on one display. Users will also be able to snap multiple windows of the same application.
Windows-8.1-snap.jpg6. Updated Store
Microsoft is also revamping the Windows Store to show more information with detailed lists of top free apps, new releases, and picks on the homepage.
7. SkyDrive improvements
Windows 8.1 will allow users to save files directly to SkyDrive and will offer an updated SkyDrive app that allows offline access to files.
8. Better PC Settings menu
Another issue that a lot of users faced with Windows 8 was that a lot of system settings were not available in the PC settings and they had to still go to the Control Panel on the desktop to access them.
Users will now be able to change their display resolution, set power options, see the make and model of their PC, change the product key, run Windows Update, and even join a domain directly from PC Settings.
9. New Internet Explorer
The Windows 8.1 update will bring a new version of the Internet Explorer browser. Internet Explorer 11 would be built for touch and would offer faster page load times in addition to several other new personalisation features.
10. Better handling of tiles
Users will be able to group and rearrange tiles more conveniently. They'll now be able to select multiple apps all at once, resize them, uninstall them, or rearrange them on the Start screen. Windows 8.1 will require users to press and hold or right click to move tiles around to prevent accidental movement of tiles. The update also brings the ability to filter apps by name, date installed, most used, or by category.

start button is back in windows 8.1 by microsoft

When Microsoft introduced Windows 8 to the world, it removed perhaps the most familiar part of the Windows user interface: the Start button. In the wake of feedback from users, the company is reversing course on that move in Windows 8.1 and bringing back the Start button in the desktop environment.
While the change is a major one in terms of design and philosophy, it's functionally minor. In the desktop environment, users will see the Windows icon ever-present in the bottom left corner. Sliding the mouse cursor on it turns the black background of the icon purple, and clicking will bring the user to the modern UI.
In the current version of Windows 8, users don't see the Start icon until they navigate the mouse cursor to the corner. A few new users have been flummoxed by the change, unsure of how to return to the modern UI without the visual cue of an icon.
Besides bringing back the Start button, Microsoft is changing its design. In Windows 8, the icon that appears in the corner is an analog of the Start screen, but in Windows 8.1 it becomes the same angled Windows logo seen in the charms menu, the keyboard and other places.
Although the pop-up menu of apps that appeared when users clicked on the Start button in Windows 7 is still dead and buried, there's a new setting in Windows 8.1 that lets users set the "All Apps" screen — which lists all apps installed on the PC, sorted in various ways — as the default instead of Start.

The change was influenced by user feedback. Thanks to the built-in cloud connectivity in Windows 8, Microsoft has access to more data about how users use its core product than ever before.

In addition, many third parties such as Samsung and Pokki have introduced their own versions of the Start button since Windows 8 killed it, and they've been successful: Pokki's Start menu has been downloaded 3 million times, and the company says users open it 10 times a day on average.
Although the new Start button is a small change in function, it represents an acknowledgement from Microsoft that it's approach to the radical changes in Windows 8 could have been better handled. The Start screen in Windows 8 technically is the old Start menu, just expanded and enhanced, but losing the icon in desktop mode was clearly unsettling to some users.
Windows 8.1star also brings along a host of other changes, including enhanced search abilities, new sizes for live tiles and a "boot to desktop" option (browse the gallery below for a preview). Microsoft will fully preview it at the company's BUILD developers conference, and Windows 8 users will be able to download it as a free update before the end of the year.
What do you think about the return of the Start button in Windows 8.1? Let us know in the comments.

best reasons why so many people are moving to Texas

Icons of Texas
 1. Jobs "I don't think people go for the weather or topography," says Joel Kotkin, professor of urban development at Chapman University in Orange, California. "The main reason people go is for employment. It's pretty simple.

"The unconventional oil and gas boom has helped turn Texas into an economic juggernaut, particularly world energy capital Houston, but growth has also been strong in tech, manufacturing and business services."
Critics have questioned whether the "Texas miracle" is a myth, based on cheap labour and poor regulation.
But Kotkin says Texas has plenty of high-wage, blue-collar jobs and jobs for university graduates, although people looking for very high-wage jobs would probably head to Seattle, San Francisco and New York.
Four of the top 10 metropolitan areas for job growth in 2013 are in Texas, according to Kotkin's website, New Geography.
Texas also has a huge military presence, which grew as defence spending increased in the decade after 9/11. Many retired Texans first came to the state as service personnel.
2. It's cheaper Once employed, it's hugely important that your pay cheque goes as far as possible, says Kotkin.

"New York, LA and the [San Francisco] Bay Area are too expensive for most people to live, but Houston has the highest 'effective' pay cheque in the country."
Kotkin came to this conclusion after looking at the average incomes in the country's 51 largest metro areas, and adjusting them for the cost of living. His results put three Texan areas in the top 10.
Houston is top because of the region's relatively low cost of living, including consumer prices, utilities and transport costs and, most importantly, housing prices, he says.
"The ratio of the median home price to median annual household income in Houston is only 2.9. In San Francisco, it's 6.7.
"In New York, San Francisco and LA, if you're blue-collar you will be renting forever and struggling to make ends meet. But people in Texas have a better shot at getting some of the things associated with middle-class life."

"There is an abundant supply of land and fewer regulations and more friendly government, generally a much better business attitude here than other states."
This flexibility, plus strict lending rules, helped to shield the state from the recent housing market crash.

'I moved because I had to'

Ryan and Jeff
Jeff Paradise, 32, works for an insurance company and relocated to Dallas in 2011, but he often returns to see his partner, Ryan (above left), in his native New York.
"I've been to quite a lot of cities in the US and Dallas is probably my least favourite. The one reason I'm here is for a financial purpose. I have a really good job but I work about 70-80 hours a week so if I had more free time, I would do more. It's a new American city, all sprawled out, because it came of age in the 60s and 70s when it was all about cars and highways. But it's definitely changed the last 5-10 years and they are trying to improve the public transport. I get the train and it's clean, on time and cheaper than New York."
Texas is one of only seven states where residents pay no personal state income tax, says Kay Bell, contributing tax editor at Bankrate and Texan native.
The state has a disproportionate take from property taxes, which has become a big complaint among homeowners, she adds. But overall, only five states had a lower individual tax burden than Texas, according to Tax Foundation research.
There are also tax incentives for businesses and this week legislators cut more than $1bn off proposed business taxes.
5. Pick your own big city
Texas has six of the country's 20 biggest cities, says Erica Grieder, author of Big, Hot, Cheap and Right: What America Can Learn from the Strange Genius of Texas.
Contrast this to, for example, Illinois, where if you want to live in a big city you can live in Chicago or you have to move out of state, she says.
But if you're in Texas you can be in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, or El Paso.
6. Austin in particular

Why I live in Austin

James McMurty
"Houston is a city, San Antonio is a city but Austin doesn't feel like that to me," says Texan-born folk singer James McMurty.
"I like it because it's equidistant to each coast so I can get in my van and drive to the west coast and drive around there for three weeks and then come home and do the same on the east coast and still have a life.
"It's far enough south that it doesn't get too cold and you don't get many twisters. And it's a blue dot [Democrat] in a red sea."
Restaurant manager Christopher Hislop, 33, moved in 2007 from Los Angeles to Austin, where he met his wife and they now have a nine-month-old boy.
"I came to Austin for a wedding and thought it was a really cool city and the people were nice - it was everything that LA wasn't but still had that hip vibe without pretension. The nightlife is great and there's an emphasis on getting out and about - they maintain trailways and nature.
"It's not Texas at all and that's what I liked about it. I don't know Texas very well, I grew up in Chicago, but Austin is not Texas because you think of 10-gallon hats and guys on horseback. It's a cliché but Austin isn't like that, it's hip and in the now. The rest of Texas is very conservative."
People like to perpetuate a myth that Austin is still the Austin it once was, says Joshua Long, author of Weird City: Sense of Place and Creative Resistance in Austin, Texas. So as it's become a big city, a movement has developed to "keep it cool, keep it weird and keep it environmentally friendly".
7. Family-friendly
Because of its good-value housing, Texas has been particularly popular with families, and some of its cities now have an above-average number of children. San Antonio is home to the largest community of gay parents.
In Texas, you can have a reasonable mortgage and pretty good schools, says Grieder. And restaurants are invariably family-friendly.
"You hear about the high drop-out rate but Texas education scores pretty well at national tests for 4th and 8th graders in math, reading and science. The aggregate is about average.
"The perception is that Texas has poor schools but it's not correct. Across the country in general, we don't have schools as good as we would like them to be."
In eighth-grade maths, for instance, Texas scored higher than the national average and outscored the three other big states of California, New York and Florida. On Sunday, an education budget was approved that restored cuts made in 2011.
8. Fewer rules

And why some might not move to Texas

University of Texas Longhrons in action
  • The weather - summer is hot. Very hot
  • Congestion problems growing in big cities
  • Not well known for fun nightlife, outside Austin
  • If you hate American football (above, University of Texas Longhorns), you might be outnumbered
"Texas is liberal in the classic sense, it's laissez-faire, so there's a lack of regulations," says Grieder, and this can apply to the obvious (business regulations) or the less obvious (city rules).
"The classic social contract is - we're not going to do a ton to help you but we're not going to get in your way. That's not 100% true of the state but there's that strand in the state."
Mortgage lending is an obvious exception. But there has been strong opposition to banning texting while driving and a proposed tax on soda.
And Governor Rick Perry is poised to sign off the strongest email privacy laws in the US, which would require state law enforcement agencies to get a warrant before accessing emails.
9. Texans are normal people The state likes to proclaim itself as an unpretentious, down-to-earth place where people are easy to get along with.
As John Steinbeck wrote: "Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America."
And for people with conservative values, it could be a natural home, although demographic shifts have prompted speculation it will be a Democratic state in the future.
People dream about moving to California, but they don't dream about moving to Texas, says Grieder, yet many of those reluctant to move there end up liking it.
She adds: "[They] realise that Texans aren't all Bible thumping, gun-toting people. The job is the trigger to come but you find it's pretty nice to live here."
10. And they're not going anywhere All this doesn't just bring in new arrivals - native Texans aren't leaving the state either. It is the "stickiest" state in the country, according to the latest figures from the Pew Research Center, which suggest that more than three-quarters of adults born in Texas still live there. Alaska is the least sticky.

An architectural beauty in Toronto, the RC Harris Water Treatment Plant, was photographed during Doors Open Toronto this past weekend by senior UT member . The building has been used in many films and television series and has been romanticized in Michael Ondaatje's novel In The Skin of a Lion. It's a true beauty and a wonderful example of the art deco style of building.

wrong contestents in miss universe crown in canada

Denise Garrido was mistakenly crowned Miss Universe Canada on Saturday night in Toronto. She has since relinquished her sash.
For a fleeting moment, all of Denise Garrido’s dreams were coming true. Then a “typo” knocked her off the 2013 Miss Universe Canada podium and called the organization’s integrity into question.
Just 24 hours after being crowned, Garrido met Sunday with pageant director Denis Davila, who stripped her of her sash, crown, trophy and chance to represent Canada at Miss Universe in the United States this December.
“My heart sank,” Garrido, 26, told the Star. “I was so sad.”
Davila informed her that a “typo” occurred when transferring the judges’ handwritten scores into a computer program that determines the winner.
Garrido had not finished first; she had finished fourth, the third runner-up to Riza Santos, 26, of Calgary, who will soon collect her crown in Toronto.

“It’s been the ultimate dream of mine,” said Garrido, who won the 2008 Miss Earth Canada and 2010 Miss World Canada pageants. “All of the other pageants were building toward this one.”
Garrido, of Bradford, Ont., holds no bad feelings toward Davila or the organization. But others say the embarrassing mix-up, a first for the organization in 11 years, could have been prevented.
After judges score the contestants, someone inputs the results into a computer. Andrew Lopez, a spokesman for Miss Universe Canada, said that for 10 years, the person inputting the results had been lawyer Nick Macos of Black Sutherland LLP.
But Macos, who is independent of Miss Universe Canada, was not available this year, Lopez said. It was left to an inexperienced pageant employee to transfer the scores; it was he who made the error.
Davila could not be reached for comment on why another person not connected to Miss Universe Canada was not found to calculate the scores.
“In retrospect, I’m sure he wishes he would have done that,” said Lopez.
A third-party audit, required to compare the handwritten scores with the computer results, spotted the error Sunday. Lopez could not confirm who carried out the audit, but said the person inputting the scores the night of the pageant is not required to be independent.
Former employee Fabricio Loza-Alvarado said it should be a requirement, and noted he raised such concerns after seeing staffers do it rather than Nick Macos in previous pageants.
“Every single person who does the calculation needs to be third party,” said Loza-Alvarado, a former production director and producer. “If not, it puts you in a very compromising situation.”
Loza-Alvarado believes that his questioning of the organization’s integrity played a role in his firing after 12 years with Miss Universe Canada.
Lopez declined to comment on Loza-Alvarado’s dismissal.
Marwa Ishow, a contestant in the 2013 pageant, which was held at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto, said Garrido deserved to win and the “typo” fiasco has left her and other competitors uneasy.
“How we do we know that everything else wasn’t wrong?” said Ishow, 22. “The whole pageant seems like it was staged.”
To make up for Garrido’s crushing disappointment, Miss Universe Canada has plans for her to join Santos on some of her titleholder duties and has tapped her to be a judge for the 2014 competition.
“I will always have the memory of being the 24-hour queen,” said Garrido, who is now too old to compete in the competition again.
This is the second year in a row that controversy has gripped the pageant. In 2012, transgender model Jenna Talackova waged a battle to enter the competition.

shahrukh khan in goa with cool looks for chennai express with hat

Shahrukh in Goa!

Shahrukh Khan seems to be experimenting with his looks in Chennai Express. We have already seen him in a short lungi, and crisp shirts like the South Indians wear. Now a new look of the star from the movie has popped up.

This time the King Khan has donned a Fedora hat. Beating the heat?

Shahrukh Khan is currently shooting for Chennai Express in Goa, and this picture is from one of the beaches. Hats are very common in Goa, and the star may have thought of trying out one for the movie, and even posed for a candid picture. The image later made it to the social networking sites, only to be lapped up by the media.

We wouldn't like to compare the star with anyone because in the past several Bollywood actors have donned Fedora hat. Salman Khan was seen in one for Ek Tha Tiger. Also, Aamir Khan was snapped with a hat recently while shooting for Dhoom 3. On Aamir, it looked more like a style statement.

Coming to Chennai Express, the crew is shooting in Goa because -- not to forget -- Goa is Rohit Shetty’s favourite and lucky destination. He has shot most of his films in the exotic state. So, it was natural for the director to shoot at least one of the schedules in Goa.

Some of the recent images from the movie’s sets see the entire team having a blast. Shahrukh Khan is even snapped biking with one of the crew members. Deepika Padukone, too, is clicked with Shahrukh on the sets.

Chennai Express is going to release this Eid along with Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Again, and it looks like a hardcore Rohit Shetty masala film. Trade pundits are already predicting a thunderous opening at the BO.

The trailer of Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer may come out with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani on May 31.

So, while you still wait for the movie’s trailer, catch here some stills from the sets to get the vibe of the film:

how to check in hidden camera in change room | how to check 2 way mirror in change room or bathroom

hidden cameras in change room and 2 way mirrors
We don't think that none of our fellow readers didn't used a trial room yet.  Are you a daily or weekly visitors of trial rooms, hotel bathrooms or public toilets? Then the chance of getting spotted by a hidden camera is very high. As the technology developing, privacy is getting vanished. There exist a huge to get captured your private pics while using any of these rooms.

Here in this article team tricksage is going to share 2 simple way to find hidden camera in trial room. Along with this trick don't forget to do a physical test while entering a trial or bath room.

Two easy way to find hidden camera in trial room

1. Detect Hidden Camera in Trial Room using your mobile phone.

You can easily detect the presence of hidden camera in a room by using your mobile phone. While entering trial room try to make a call from your mobile. If you can't make a call there is a chance of a hidden camera. The scientific explanation behind this phenomena is "interference of fiber optic cable during the signal transfer".

2. Detect trial room mirrors are two way mirrors

While entering a toilet, bathroom, hotel rooms, trial rooms, etc., How many of you make sure that the mirror you see is a real mirror, or a 2-way mirror? [ 2 way mirror mirror is the mirror with which you can be spotted from the other end]. There may be chance for people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms or trial rooms.

Do the following step:

Place your fingernail tip against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror.

If your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then sure that it is a TWO WAY MIRROR. So don't forget to do atleast the finger nail test before changing the dress inside a trial room.

The reason there is a gap on a real mirror, is because the silver is on the back of the mirror under the glass. Whereas with a 2 way mirror, the silver is on the surface.

One and only one thing i want to say to my fellow readers are that DON'T forget to share this article in social networking sites because you or your relatives may be the next victims.

Baseball Rules, History, Tips & Equipment

A history of Baseball, how to play, tips for improvement & necessary equipment

How to Play Baseball

Baseball, a bat-and-ball sport, is considered America's national pastime. The object of the game is to score runs by hitting a ball with a bat and running around a series of four bases.

Baseball History

Baseball originated from older bat-and-ball games played in England in the mid-18th century. British and Irish immigrants brought the game to America, where the modern version of baseball was developed. By the late 19th century baseball was recognized as the America's national sport. Today, baseball is popular at the professional, amateur, and youth levels in North America, parts of Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and parts of East Asia.
There are many professional leagues, with Major League Baseball (MLB) being the most popular in the United States and around the world.

Baseball Rules

Baseball is played between two teams, with nine players to a side. Each player plays a specific defensive position in the field. The field is bordered by two foul lines that extend forward from home plate at 45 degree angles. The 90 degree area within the foul lines is fair territory, and the 270 degrees area outside the foul lines is foul territory. The area between the four series of bases, arranged at the corners of a 90 ft diamond, is considered the infield. The fair territory inside of the foul lines and outside of the infield is called the outfield. Defensive fielding positions include: First baseman, second baseman, third baseman, catcher (to cover home plate), pitcher, shortstop (covers the area between second and third base), and three outfielders.
Baseball consists of nine innings. An inning is composed of both teams coming up to bat. A team remains at bat until they get three outs. A team acquires outs by 1) A strikeout: the player up to bat gets three strikes by hitting the ball foul (a player cannot get a third strike on a foul ball), swinging and missing the ball, or having the ball thrown past them in the strike zone (The strike zone is the area over home plate in between the batters knees and shoulders). 2) A fly out: a player hits the ball, and it is caught in the air by the defense (a fielder can record a fly out in fair or foul territory). 3) A tag out: a player is caught off the base and tagged with the ball. 4) A force out: the fielding team gets the ball to a base before the runner (this occurs when the runner cannot return to the previous base because it is occupied by another runner, or they are running to first base).
The team with the most runs at the end of nine innings wins. In the event of a tie, extra innings are played until the tie is broken. A team scores runs by having a player touch all four bases in order. An offensive player reaches base by successfully hitting the ball into play, or by getting walked. A player is walked when they are up to bat and they receive four balls (pitches outside of their strike zone), or the pitcher hits them with the ball.
After a player hits the ball they run to a base. A runner can choose to stay on that base or advance to the next base if unoccupied. Once the play is stopped the runner can only advance to the next base when their teammate puts the ball into play or by stealing a base. A runner can steal a base, run to the next base, when the opposing pitcher has the ball. If a teammate flies out the runner must return to the base they started at. However, the runner has the option of tagging up, waiting for the ball to be caught, and then tagging the previous base and advancing to the next base.

Baseball Tips

Baseball players should spend equal time working on their hitting in the batting cage, and their defense in the field. Batting cages are a great way to practice without a partner, because a machine pitches the ball. In the field, players should work with a partner on throwing and fielding the ball. Players can work on getting their bodies in front of ground balls, and getting under fly balls.

Baseball Equipment

Baseball requires a bat, a ball, four bases, and each player to have a leather glove. Bats are traditionally made out of wood, but metal bats are used at lower levels. A baseball is around nine cm in circumference. It has a rubber cork center, wound in yarn and covered in white cowhide, with red stitching. Hitters must wear protective batting helmets. Most hitters also choose to wear batting gloves. Catchers need a face mask and a chest protector.

football american history | make a football play | football plays offense | How to Play Football | Football History | Football Rules | Football Tips | Football Equipment

Football Rules, History, Tips & Equipment

A history of Football, how to play, tips for improvement & necessary equipment

How to Play Football

Football, also known as American football, is a team game that combines strategy and physical play. The object of football is to advance the ball up the field by running and passing the ball, and scoring a touchdown by crossing the ball into the end zone. Professional football, high school football, and college football are all highly popular spectator sports in the United States.

Football History

Football originated from a primitive game of rugby played in America in the 1840s. In 1880, Walter Camp, considered the "Father of American Football," exchanged the traditional rugby scrum for a line of scrimmage. In 1882, the four down system was introduced to negate Princeton and Yale's strategy to hold the ball without trying to score. The following year, Camp reduced the number of players to eleven, and introduced the seven-man offensive line, with a quarterback, two halfbacks, and a full back. The first professional game was played in 1895. The National Football League (NFL) began in the early 1920s. Today, football is one of the most popular sports in the United States.

Football Rules

Football is played by two teams, with eleven players from each team on the field at a time. A football field is 120 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide, including a field of 100 yards and two end zones of ten yards each. A game of football consists of four 12-15 minute quarters, depending on the level of play.
The game begins with a coin toss. The winning team gets to decide if they would like to receive the ball, or which end of the field they would like to defend in the first half. One team then kicks the ball to the other team. A kick off occurs at the beginning of each half, and after every score.
The team that takes control of the ball has four attempts, called downs, in which to advance the ball ten yards. When the offense succeeds in gaining ten yards they receive a new set of downs. If the offensive team fails to gain ten yards after four plays, the other team gets possession of the ball.
The ball is put into play by a snap, where the center passes the ball between his legs to the quarterback. The quarterback then has the option to throw or run the ball. Once the quarterback passes the line of scrimmage (an imaginary line across the field from where the ball was snapped), they can no longer throw the ball forward.
A down ends when: The player with the ball is tackled to the ground, or has their forward motion stopped by the opposing team; A pass is thrown out of bounds or hits the ground; The ball or player with the ball goes out of bounds; A team scores. An official blows their whistle to signal that a down is over.
A change of possession occurs when: A team fails to gain ten yards after four plays; A team kicks the ball off after a score, or at the beginning of a half; A team chooses to punt the ball; A player from the defensive team catches a pass in the air (interception); An offensive player drops the ball after displaying they had possession and a defensive player recovers it (fumble). After a kickoff, punt, interception, or fumble, the ball is live, and the team gaining possession can run with the ball up field.
A touchdown is worth six points. A team scores a touchdown when a player runs into or catches a pass in the opponent's end zone. After scoring a touchdown, a team has the option to attempt an extra point by trying to kick the ball through the upright. Teams can elect to go for two points and attempt to drive the ball into the end zone on one play, starting from the two or three yard line (depending on level of play). A team scores a field goal, worth three points, by kicking the ball over the crossbar and through the goal posts. A team scores a safety, worth two points, if an opposing player is downed in the end zone. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Football Tips

Good football players are agile. Agility drills include: jumping rope, running through tires, and jumping over cones.
There are a variety of lesser contact versions of Football available. Tackle Football is the sport practiced by major professional leagues such as the NFL, but flag football and touch football are varieties that allow the player to be "tackled" by either touching with two hands or pulling a piece of ribbon or "flag" off the opposing player. This also allows for Co-ed or women's teams to engage without fear of injury.

Football Equipment

Football requires each player to have a helmet, shoulder pads, football pants, cleats, and a mouth guard. The game is played with a spheroid shape leather ball. A football is 11 inches long and 22 inches in circumference in the middle.
